About Me

AlJoya Hall is a freelance light electrician, and designer with a scenic designer/construction background. Born in Houston Texas, currently resides in Chicago, IL.

My interest in lights and scenic design started at a young age. I remember as a kid watching Tyler Perry plays and seeing the set and lights and thinking, that is what I want everyone to see from me as well. My interest in lights continued due to the fact that I find connection with lights in expressing feelings and emotions. 

As an artist I feel as if your work should represent who you are. I want my work to show how I felt not only designing the show but as the audience watching. I want my designs to speak to the audience in a way that the play does not.  Theatre making is all about reaching your audience and as a designer I want to do that very thing. I want to leave the audience with not only a story about the play but a story of how I felt.  

My inspiration for being a designer doesn't come from other lighter designers but from artwork I see in the world or just other artists like Pascal, Bertolt. I want to emulate their work into the stage of light.  I also get inspired just from looking at everyday people. I do not have lighting examples but I do have drawings of my work that have been influenced by what has been happening in this day and time.  The art that I create, whether with lights or on paper, will enhance the audience’s mind. Audience will have to think when they look at my piece and wonder, not only with what is going on now but what the piece is saying about the future. 

  In order to create such pieces, I want to work with creators that aren’t just worried about the now but the future as well. I want to collaborate with artists that aren’t afraid to take risks and take a stand. I also want to work with artists that don’t sugar coat but just state the hard truth.  As an artist, I want to be able to not be pushed physically but mentally to my limits in whatever I work on.
